How Clean Is the Air in Your Home?

There has been an increased interest in air purification equipment this year due to the Covid-19 pandemic. But if you’re looking for something that will clean the air in your home, you’ll want an air purifier that kills viruses – and a whole lot more.

Research has shown that in most cases the quality of the air in our homes, offices and other indoor spaces isn’t nearly as clean and healthy as we think it is.

“In the last several years, a growing body of scientific evidence has indicated that the air within homes and other buildings can be more seriously polluted than the outdoor air in even the largest and most industrialized cities,” the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency  says. “Other research indicates that people spend approximately 90 percent of their time indoors. Thus, for many people, the risks to health may be greater due to exposure to air pollution indoors than outdoors.”

Threats to Indoor Air Quality

As the air quality experts at the EPA explain, “Indoor pollution sources that release gases or particles into the air are the primary cause of indoor air quality problems in homes.”

It is easy to see how smoking can contaminate the air in your home, but did you know that the furniture or cabinets in your home could be releasing gases into the air? Your carpets, cleaning products and craft supplies might also be a source of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that can be harmful to your health and the health of your family.

And there’s more. According to the EPA the list of possible sources for indoor air pollution also includes:

  • central heating and cooling systems and humidification devices
  • pesticides
  • oil, gas and kerosene
  • wood
  • building materials, including insulation
  • personal care products
  • poor ventilation
  • humidity
